At
Blooms Flower Shoppe we care about the environment so that our customers don't have to think about it. There are
many things to consider when ordering flowers or planning an event or wedding. The floral industry is extremely wasteful
and uses tons of plastics and non-biodegradable foams most of which is supplied from China. Many companies are now direct shipping flowers instead of utilizing their local vendors and growers. Sustainability
is a huge factor in greening your business.
- We utilize our local vendors as much as possible to have less of an impact on the environment and to reduce our
carbon footprint.
- We recycle plastics, paper and card board from all
of our shipments.
- We compost our floral and green waste.
- We use locally made soy and beeswax candles for weddings and events Instead of paraffin which is
toxic and made from petroleum waste.
- We use 100 % recycled post consumer waste
paper for all of our printing and faxing needs.
- We utilize local vendors for
all of our marketing materials which if printed are all printed on 100% post consumer waste recycled paper
- We have an organic cutting garden that we utilize for different foliages in floral arrangements
during the summer and fall months.
- We utilize a local certified organic flower
growers when in season.
- We wire our boutonnieres as opposed to glueing (which
is very toxic and doesn't hold up as well)
- We utilize e-mail as much as
possible to minimize paper waste
- We use compostable plastic made from
corn to package boutonnieres and corsages
- all of our paper bags and tissue
papers used for packaging are made from recyled paper waste
- our signature
pots are biodegradeble bamboo and can be planted in the earth.
- we utilize
glass, metal, clay and biodegradable bamboo pots for our plants and arrangements as well as other renewable materials, like
mosses, twigs, rocks and shells etc...
Some things to
think about when planning your green event:
#1
if you are using silk ,synthetic or beaded flowers it defeats the whole purplose of being green. Most of the silk
and plastic flowers used to make the synthetic bouquets are made from petroleum by-products and shipped from China or indonesia.
#2
If you are having a green event and your facility is providing the paraffin candles, you are defeating the whole purpose of
being green. Paraffin is a by-product of the petroleum industry and is like burning diesel fuel. Make sure you are burning
only 100% soy or beeswax candles. They cost more but burn twice as long as paraffin.
#3 Stay away from any type of plastic container.
Glass is reusable and does not have the same impact on the environment. Utilize metal, glass, clay and other biodegradable
or reusable materials
#4 Stay away from arrangements made with floral foam. Oasis floral foam is made from plastic and will never
biodegrade. Most florist go through about 48 -96 bricks of floral foam a month for funerals and weddings.
